Ranchi waterfalls in one day — Hundru, Jonha, Dassam itinerary

Ranchi is the only Indian city that can fairly claim three of the country's tallest waterfalls within a 50 km radius. Hundru Falls (320 ft), Jonha Falls (150 ft) and Dassam Falls (144 ft, ten streams) can all be done in a single day — if you start early.

The order matters

Hundru Falls first — it's the furthest (45 km east), the steepest descent, and you want fresh legs. Jonha and Dassam are 25 minutes from each other and can be done in any order in the second half of the day.

  • 06:30 — Pickup from your Ranchi hotel
  • 08:00 — Hundru Falls (descend the 740 steps)
  • 10:30 — Climb back up + photographs
  • 11:30 — Drive to Jonha Falls (1 hr)
  • 12:45 — Jonha Falls + Buddhist shrine
  • 14:00 — Lunch at Jonha (small dhaba) or carry packed
  • 15:00 — Drive to Dassam Falls (25 min)
  • 15:30 — Dassam Falls
  • 17:30 — Drive back to Ranchi
  • 19:00 — Reach Ranchi

What to pack

All three waterfalls involve walking, descents and getting splashed. Pack accordingly.

  • Grippy shoes (the rock-cut steps get slippery)
  • Quick-dry clothes — you will get wet at Jonha
  • 2 litres of water per person
  • Packed lunch (or have lunch in Ranchi after Hundru)
  • Power bank — phone signal is patchy at all three
  • Small first-aid kit (band-aids especially)

When to go

Best is October to February — strong post-monsoon flow with safe steps. Avoid July and August (steps are dangerous in heavy rain). March to May is okay but the falls are thinner and the heat is brutal.

What it costs

Our 'Waterfalls Trio' package starts at ₹2,999 for a sedan (4 pax) and ₹3,999 for an SUV (6 pax) — all-inclusive of fuel, tolls, parking and driver. About 130 km of total driving.

People also ask

Can I do Hundru, Jonha and Dassam Falls in one day?

Yes — it's a 130 km circuit and a 12-hour day if you start by 6:30 AM. The 'Waterfalls Trio' is one of our most popular packages.

Which is the tallest waterfall near Ranchi?

Hundru Falls at 320 ft (98 m), on the Subarnarekha river. It's also the most visited. Lodh Falls in Latehar is the tallest in Jharkhand at 143 m, but it's 195 km from Ranchi and not part of the day-trip circuit.

Is swimming allowed at any of the waterfalls?

There are shallow pools at Hundru and Dassam where bathing is informally tolerated, but the main plunge pools are dangerous (strong undercurrents). Stay in supervised shallow areas only.
